When is Coordination Required? The FCC requires coordination anytime a tower is constructed within 1.0 kilometers of a Non-directional broadcast station and 3.0 kilometers of a Directional Broadcast Station. Why is Coordination Required? In AM broadcasting, the tower is the actual antenna. When another tower is constructed near the AM broadcast towers, there is the potential of distorting the AM station's pattern. What Determines Whether the Tower will Distort the AM Pattern? The frequency of the AM Station, the height of the Cell/PCS tower, and where the tower is in relation to the AM station's pattern. Is Detuning Always Required? No, in fact, the majority of the time, detuning is not required. What is Required in AM Coordination? The FCC requires first and foremost that the AM station be notified of any proposed construction. They also required "measurements". The FCC no longer specifying the type of measurements. Normally, the station's directional monitor points will suffice, or a few measurements on the Non-directional pattern of the station. Measurements should be taken both before (pre-) and after (post-) construction. What are the steps to AM Coordination? 1.Notify the AM station of the proposed
construction, in writing, 2. Complete the Pre-construction measurements. 3. If detuning is required, install the equipment and adjust. 4. Complete the Post-construction measurements. 5. Write Final Report.
